UNDERWATER OBSERVATION

The passion for for investigating the bottom of the ocean led to the creation of the company FundOceano, which offers deep sea diving in a manned submersible for people interested in discovering the undersea world below depths accessible to divers.

The LULA 1000 manned submersible, with capacity for a crew of three, can dive to depths of up to 1000 meters, transforming each dive into a real odyssey into the unknown.

FundOceano also offers catamaran expeditions with the aim of mapping/documenting the sea bed, underwater photography and filming and dives up to a depth of 1000 meters in the LULA1000 submersible.

LULA 1000

The LULA1000 submersible takes a crew of three people to a depth of 1000 meters, in search of unknown habitats.

The submersible is the only one of its kind. Its spherical viewport measuring 1.4 m in diameter gives the crew an excellent view of the bottom of the sea. This makes the LULA1000 ideal for observing and documenting marine life in-situ.

The LULA1000 was built in accordance with the standards of the classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) which makes annual inspections and tests.

ACTIVITIES

.

DIVE TO A DEPTH OF 1000 m

Dive to a depth of 1000 meters on the slopes of the islands of Pico or São Jorge.

The dive starts on the slope of one of the islands where, due to the relief, you can observe a concentration of underwater life, such deep-sea pelagic species (in the water column), squid, dragon fish, viper fish among other deepsea fish, ctenophoras, jellyfish and other invertebrates.

You can often see sharks on the slopes colonised by deep water corals and fields of sponges.

Depth of the dive: 1000 meters.

Duration of the activity approximately 8 hours:

Trip to the position of the dive aboard the catamaran ADA Rebikoff - 1.5 hours

Dive aboard the Lula 1000 - 5 hours

Return to the Port of Horta aboard the catamaran ADA Rebikoff - 1.5 hours

Price 1 person - 5,000 €

2 people - 7,000€

U BOAT 581

Dive to the shipwreck of the World War II German U-581 submarine, which sank on 2 February 1942 off the island of Pico at a depth of 870 meters.

The shipwreck was located by the crew of the Lula1000 in September of 2016.

Today the U-581 submarine is a genuine artificial cold water reef, colonised by various species of deep water corals and sponges and countless other fish and crustaceans.

The shipwreck is in a good state of conservation, and you can perfectly make out the hull, conning tower, propeller shaft and the deformations caused by the detonation of the depth charges that caused it to sink.

The ascent is made along the slope of the island of Pico which is covered by a garden of cold water corals.

Depth of the dive: around 900 meters.

Duration of the activity approximately 8 hours:

Trip to the position of the dive aboard the catamaran ADA Rebikoff - 2 hours

Dive aboard the Lula 1000 - 4 hours

Return to the port of Horta aboard the catamaran ADA Rebikoff - 2 hours

Price 1 person - 5,000 €

2 people - 7,000€

 UNDERWATER VOLCANO

Visit to the crater of a dormant underwater volcano, the Mont' Ana, 4 miles out from the port of Horta.

Dive down to 530 meters in depth, ascending to the crater of the volcano at 400 meters.

Trip around the crater for 1/2 mile.

Frequent encounters with conger eels, squid, wreckfish, monkfishes, sixgill sharks (deepsea sharks) and other species. Abundance of cold water corals.

Ascent to the top of the underwater mountain at a depth of 280 meters, which is covered by a yellow coral reef (reef discovered by the LULA1000 crew in 2013).

Duration of the activity approximately 7 hours:

Trip to the position of the dive aboard the catamaran ADA Rebikoff - 1.5 hours

Dive aboard the Lula 1000 - 4 hours

Return to the port of Horta aboard the catamaran ADA Rebikoff - 1.5 hours

Depth of the dive: between 250 and 530 meters

Price 1 person - 3,000 €,

2 people - 5,000€
